DONCASTER KNIGHTS: Bedford and Bristol are my tips for Championship Play-off final

WELL that’s it then, the season is over for Doncaster Knights.

The Championship two legged semi-finals continue with Bedford playing London Welsh and Bristol playing Cornish Pirates.

It I was a betting man, which I am not, my money would be on Bedford and Bristol to make the final which is probably the kiss of death for both of them.

The end of any season inevitably bring sadness as some players move on to pastures new but, as the saying goes, “the King is dead, long live the King”.

The Knights start back training on June 11 and we will be welcoming more than 15 new players into the squad which this coming season should hopefully number 31.

This weekend sees the Heineken Cup semi-finals and two crackers they promise to be particularly the game in France where Clermont Auvergne entertain Leinster.

A very difficult game to call as the French always seem to pull out all the stops in their own country. The other is in Dublin where Ulster play Edinburgh where my money is on the Ulsterman to win.

This Sunday our Colts XV follow in the footsteps of some illustrious predecessors when they play Hull Ionians at Huddersfield in the Yorkshire Colts Cup final.

Doncaster’s drive up the leagues in the early 1990s was on the back of a golden period of four years when we played in four consecutive cup finals, winning two and losing two.

Many of the players from those teams formed the nucleus of the successful Doncaster senior teams that followed. I cannot move off this subject without mentioning my old friend and drinking partner Peter Waddington who, along with Andy Bowes, coached the teams in those days.

Finally, although rugby has just about finished at Castle Park, the place itself will be busy with private functions, at the beginning of June, a big event to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Keep an eye on the club’s website: www drfc.
