Doncaster Knights came agonisingly close to defeating London Welsh on the opening day of the new Championship season.
First half tries from Latu Makaafi (2) and Andrew Bulumakau kept the Knights on the tails of the newly-relegated visitors.
But two converted tries by Guy Armitage and three penalties from Joe Carlisle edged Welsh into a 23-22 half time lead.
The Exiles’ Nic Reynolds touched down on the hour but two penalties from Dougie Flockhart, to add to his seven points before the break, kept Doncaster in touch.
Armitage completed his hat trick with ten minutes to play to give his side a seven-point cushion.
A late catch and drive try from Alex Shaw ensured a tense finale - and earned Doncaster a four-try bonus point - but Welsh held on for a narrow victory.
