Weetabix with baked beans has gone viral on Twitter - here’s why

Fruit in a salad, pineapple on a pizza, strawberries and balsamic - you may have considered these some of the strangest food combinations, until now.

That’s right, because Weetabix have just blown our minds with this questionable, high fibre brekkie - Baked Beans on Weetabix.

The cereal brand shared this new way of serving up breakfast, and Twitter went wild. Now, embassies and other international companies have weighed in on the controversial recipe.

Here is how you make it, the reactions and the nutritional value of this controversial start to your day.

Who invented the recipe?

While we can’t be sure how the recipe came to be, the original post of the food combo came from the creators of Weetabix themselves.

At 10am on 9 February, the creation was launched on Twitter, with the company asking:

“Why should bread have all the fun, when there's Weetabix? Serving up @HeinzUK

Beanz on bix for breakfast with a twist. #ItHasToBeHeinz #HaveYouHadYourWeetabix”.

This captioned a picture of a seemingly average pair of weetabix biscuits, a box of the cereal, a bowl of beans and a helping of the beans over the top of the weetabix.

To add insult to injury, it was served with a knife and fork.

How do I make it?

It’s as simple as it seems - think beans on toast, but with weetabix.

Though it isn’t clear whether you cook the beans or not, we personally recommend you do.

Quality produce is always significant when recreating any recipe, so Heinz Baked Beans are also advised.

Here is the recipe, which we consider to be for beginners. It serves two and takes approximately three minutes:

You will need:

- four weetabix biscuits (plain is advised, but there are also chocolate, banana and red berries)

- one tin (460g) Heinz baked beans

- three bowls

- spoon for stirring

Step 1: decant the beans into one of the three bowls and microwave for 2 minutes 30 seconds - stirring half way through

Step 2: place two weetabix into each of the other bowls

Step 3: pour half of the beans over each of the two Weetabix.

What have others said about it?

When the Tweet went live, many companies were quick to respond with their thoughts, but the controversial recipe has now attracted the attention of countries and governing bodies.

Dominos were quick to Tweet: “Us: Pineapple on pizza is the most controversial food ever.

“Weetabix: Hold my spoon.”

Weetabix responded: “We're almost scared to ask what the verdict on pineapple on Weetabix may be…”

Nando’s also flagged their concerns: “You okay hun? DM's are open if you need to talk Sparkling heart.” before KFC replied to Nando’s: “Let’s set aside our differences to prosecute this under the Geneva Convention.”

Israel even broke down political lines to bring the Middle-East together in disgust, commenting from the state’s official Twitter account: “Finally something that all Middle-Eastern countries can agree on.

“Just no. Also, want to know how you can upgrade your weetabix? Hummus.”

And the NHS were even distracted from fighting the pandemic to add a quick comment: “That Tweet should come with a health warning.”

Lidl UK joined Nando’s in their concerns: “Babe are u ok? You've hardly touched your Weetabix and beans!”

Weetabix reassured them, responding: “Just about to tuck in, babes. Question is `spoon or knife and fork?’”

Rival brand Kellog’s also chimed in: “We’ve heard of putting the milk in first, but this takes the biscuit,” but Weetabix bit back: “Keep up Kellogg's, milk is sooo 2020.”

Government Communication Headquarters (GCHQ) were quick to investigate this criminal behaviour, stating: “We found... No intelligence.
