Mexborough Health petition

We would like to congratulate the staff of the Mexborough Medical Practice for collecting 1,000 signatures on a petition demanding better health facilities in Mexborough.

But they may pale into insignificance behind the current government plans to implement the biggest restructuring of the NHS since its creation in 1948.

The NHS Confederation – comprising the British Medical Association, the Faculty of Public Health and the Royal Colleges, together with the NHS unions have warned that hospitals will have to close, patient care could be hit and treatment rationed by GPs. They have described the plans to give GPs the responsibility for commissioning health care as “extraordinarily risky”.

We believe that’s an understatement. If the Health and Social Care Bill becomes law it will be the beginning of the end for the Health Service as we know it. The real agenda of the Tories is the privatisation of the NHS and the Liberals are helping them to do it.

The Labour Party will do what it can to oppose these proposals nationally.

Locally we are doing our best to oppose the downgrading of Montagu Hospital and any other NHS changes that adversely affect the people of Mexborough but we need to be able to demonstrate that the people of Mexborough are behind us. So we call upon the people of Mexborough to join us by writing to the NHS voicing their concerns to NHS Doncaster, White Rose House, Ten Pound Walk, Doncaster DN4 5DJ.

Sue Phillips, David Holland

Mexborough Labour Councillors
