The Woodland Adventure Project is set to be built in Sandall Park after Doncaster Council granted planning permission for the scheme.

The community group Friends of Sandall Park, which has worked to improve the park in recent years, hopes the new facility, a built obstacle course, will provide children and teenagers a place to spend their time and release their energies.

Friends of Sandall Park has secured £50,000 funding for the project from an organisation called WREN.

A two year consultation was carried out by the group over the scheme, which was supportive of the project.

The Woodland Adventure Project will be situated in the under-used south eastern area of the park, on a plot of land that was formerly occupied by a mini-golf course that is said to have become a place for anti-social behaviour. The project aims to ensure the timber apparatus match the woodland appearance of the area.

By building the new playground away from the park’s other facilities the Friends of Sandall Park hopes to more equally redistribute footfall around the whole park and free up space from the some of the busier areas.

Don Crabtree, of Friends of Sandall Park said: “This is really great for the community, there’s no facility in the whole of South Yorkshire that offers the kind of adventure park we’re building for free.

“All of us at The Friends of Sandall Park are totally committed to ensuring all of our services are available free of charge.

“I always say that ‘if you don’t use it, lose it’, so that’s why it’s really great that this facility is being built in the underused area of the park.”

Construction is due to begin once a contamination risk assessment is carried out, due to a brick and tile factory formerly being in the area. No set completion date has been set but Friends of Sandall Park expect the facility to be open in May.
