You’ll want a repeat visit to Deja Vu!

i’ve always enjoyed a good Indian meal but have never been a fan of the bloated full feeling you are left with when the spicy taste subsides.

But after taking a trip to Deja Vu in Thorne to attend a special ‘Taste of India’ themed evening the only feeling I was left with was a strong desire to eat here again.

A smart cafe and bistro by day, Deja Vu, which has become a popular destination for residents wanting a more chic and sophisticated breakfast and lunch experience, transforms on select evenings into a restaurant offering themed set menus. With an Italian and French themed night already under his belt it was time for chef Mark Gravel, who opened the venue in September, to try his hand at the complex cuisine of India.

As I walked in with my bring your own bottle of wine in hand I was greeted with lanterns, candles and pictures of India decorating the walls to complement the theme.

This was a nice touch and showed that the staff had really gone above and beyond to make the evening something to remember. To start the six course set menu we were handed a spicy tomatoes shot that definitely tickled the taste buds.

The starter which followed was a generous home-made onion bhaji presented on a beautiful ornate Indian salad that wouldn’t have looked out of place at a swanky restaurant.

The bhaji had just the right amount of spice and was not at all greasy like the usual take-out starters I have tried before.

Then it was on to the main, a balti style chicken curry with a twist with a naan bread on the side.

The curry was relatively mild but with a nice spicy after taste and was thankfully free from the usual blobs of grease often seen swimming around in most Indian dishes.

We were then treated to a glass of champagne with mango before the next course arrived.

I was dubious as to whether I would enjoy the shot glass filled with orange and cardamon jelly but it was really refreshing and a nice palette cleanser after the curry.

Before I had time to consider if I could fit any more food in it was time for dessert.

I was presented with a bowl of kulfi, a popular Indian frozen milk-based dessert with mango which was the perfect light and cooling end to such a flavoursome meal. It was then time for the final course a nice cup of coffee - and all this for £24.95.

In fact Mark is finding the themed evenings so popular that he already has six course menus set for Halloween and Christmas themed evenings. The Halloween themed night takes place on October 25 and the Christmas themed evenings will take place on December 6, 13 and 20 - all bring your own drink.
