Work starts on £1m sewer and water scheme

Work is set to begin this week on a £1m sewer and water improvement scheme in Westwoodside.

The village’s sewerage system in recent times has been struggling to cope during heavy rain so Severn Trent Water is channelling its cash into installing larger sewers and a new pumping station.

Yorkshire Water will be working on their behalf to divert an existing water pipe at the same time – the two companies are working together to help minimise disruption to the local community. Work was due to begin yesterday (September 24) and is due to be completed in January 2015.

Severn Trent Water manager, Tim Sawyer, said: “We’re making major improvements to the sewer system serving homes in Westwoodside. We know that homes on Westmoreland Close and Park Lane have suffered from sewer flooding in the past; our £1 million work will help to prevent that from happening again in the future.

“We’ve listened to feedback from the local community to help us plan our work and try to minimise any disruption. We’ll start by laying 340 metres of larger sewer pipes along Doncaster Road and building a new sewage pumping station just off it. This will help handle more storm water and better protect homes and businesses from sewer flooding, when work is complete.”

However, the work doesn’t just stop at the sewers, as Yorkshire Water’s project manager Brigitte Sorby explains. “While work on the sewers is being carried out, our contract partners Balfour Beatty will be moving a water pipe to make space for the new sewer. We expect to start work towards the end of October and be finished in early November. We’ll be laying 40m of new water pipe along Doncaster Road.”
