A Wheatus spokesman said: “In a beautiful piece of boy-band cosmic serendipity, Wheatus’ forthcoming UK jaunt will be mostly funded by royalties received via One Direction’s recent cover version of the band’s 2000 worldwide mega-hit Teenage Dirtbag.

“And, boy, does every little help for rock bands in these straitened 21st Century times – money was so tight for Wheatus following their UK tour of autumn 2015 that, unbelievably, the band were forced to sell much of their equipment on e-Bay on their return to the US in order to try and make ends meet.”

Wheatus play Doncaster’s Diamond Live Lounge on May 9. For tickets, priced £15, visit www.diamondlive.co.uk
