University of Sheffield SU head is made deputy lieutenant

University of Sheffield Students' Union Head of External Engagement Stella McHugh has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire.

Stella’s role within the Students’ Union sees her heading the team responsible for community volunteering and charitable fundraising, including nationally recognised student projects as Sheffield Volunteering, RAG and Bummit.

Facilitating great partnerships between student groups and local organisations to make a practical difference – in terms of volunteers, projects or financial resources - has always been at the heart of the role.

But recently the remit extended to broader collaboration between Sheffield Students’ Union and the city too.

It was through her work with Sheffield Volunteering’s community projects that she met Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe and was invited to become a Deputy Lieutenant for the County.

The post sees her deputising for the Lord-Lieutenant who is Her Majesty’s personal representative in the County. Appointment as a Deputy Lieutenant requires the none-disproval of The Queen and entitles Stella to use the suffix DL after her name.

“A major part of the work I lead is about encouraging our students to engage in local issues and get involved in the city and its life, so I do see there is real potential to build links between these two roles,” Stella said.

“It’s a huge honour to be invited to become a Deputy Lieutenant and quite humbling. Just great for University of Sheffield students’ community contribution to be recognised through this too.

“The Lord-Lieutenant has an inspiring network of committed, local people across the County. I’m looking forward to being in the role and building on Sheffield Students’ Union’s proud heritage of community partnership.”
