St. George’s Bridge in Doncaster is to reopen for traffic in both directions on Sunday 30 August, one week ahead of schedule.
The news comes after months of traffic chaos during which motorists reported being delayed for hours at a time.
Workmen have also been subjected to abuse and attacks by disgruntled motorists during the repair programme.
The necessary works which have seen the worn out bridge joints replaced with modern joints with an extensive lifespan, drainage works, carriageway resurfacing and junction improvements will be completed earlier than predicted subject to there being no weather constraints.
Peter Dale, Director of Regeneration and Environment, said: “We have been pulling out all the stops to complete these essential works and I am delighted this has paid dividends with the bridge set to reopen earlier than originally planned and well in time for Doncaster’s 10-day St Leger Festival Week which runs from 4 to 13 September.
“This work on St. George’s Bridge has been vital for our road network. It will provide road users with a much better travel experience and ensure future maintenance needs are minimised. I would like to thank road users for bearing with us while we undertook these important strategic repairs and refurbishment work.”
To complete the works the outbound route over St George’s Bridge will be closed on Thursday August 27 between 11pm and 6am to remove concrete barriers and change the line markings so traffic can start using the correct carriageway again when heading out of town.
Works will then continue through Friday August 28 and into the night to lay anti-skid material and paint new lines to prepare the inbound carriageway to be re-opened.
During the early hours of Sunday August 30 road lining and markings at the approaches to St Mary’s and St George’s roundabouts will be carried out and once this is complete the bridge will be reopened for traffic in both directions.
Once St George’s Bridge is fully re-opened, North Bridge Road will be closed for all traffic (except for access to Marsh Gate / North Bridge / other businesses) for up to six days to reinstate lines, signs and surface dress the road.
