The firm is the UK's largest independent toy retailer and was founded by husband and wife team Catherine and Gary Grant in 1981.

The chain's life began when the Grants took over a toy shop in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and since then they have opened shops all over the country.

Because of the couple's Christian background, branches of The Entertainer do not open on Sundays and the business does not sell products deemed to have a connection to the occult, including Harry Potter merchandise. Toy machine guns are not stocked, although toy firearms of other kinds are sold.

The store is currently recruiting sales assistants to work in the Doncaster branch.
