A HERO dog whose barking alerted his owner to a house fire has been nominated for a top award.

Tojo, a Chihuahua breed, started barking loudly when arsonists set fire to the outside of his home on Sykes Court, Swinton, early one night in February.

In doing so, the pet alerted his owner Mandy Hayes and her teenage son and they managed to escape unharmed.

Tojo is now set to be rewarded for his heroics after he was listed as a finalist in the fifth annual Dogs Trust Honours Awards.

Mrs Hayes said: “Tojo will forever be a hero dog in my eyes, he undoubtedly saved me and my son’s life.

“I can’t even imagine what could have happened if it weren’t for Tojo’s quick thinking.

“He is a life saver.”

Tojo is one of four dogs nominated for the award.

The winning hairy heroes will be presented with their awards at the red carpet Dogs Trust Honours event - hosted by Dragons Den star Deborah Meaden - at The Honourable Artillery Company in London on May 21.
