Students are mixing Shakespeare with science fiction with their latest school production.

Young actors, including some from the Isle, at Thorne’s Trinty Academy, are staging Return to the Forbidden Planet until Friday, February 7.

Written by Bob Carlton, the play is a musical based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the 1950s film Forbidden Planet brought to life with a host of classic rock and roll songs. Much of the dialogue is taken from speeches in The Tempest.

The high energy plot follows the crew of scientific survey flight nine, whose spaceship gets caught up in a meteor shower and is drawn towards the mysterious planet D’Illyria. Battles over love, a brain enhancing formula called X Factor and a tentacled monster all ensue.

The main cast comprises Dale Smith as Captain Tempest, Matthew Elwood as Dr Prospero, Ryan Keeling as Ariel, Mazi Fitzpatrick as the Science Officer, Dale Hornsby as Bosun Arras, Sam Megraw-Wilkinson as the Navigation Officer, Robin Coe as Miranda and Jordan Jones as Cookie.

Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets cost £5 adults and £3 concessions from the academy’s reception in Church Balk.
