The fire service will be on hand to give advice to Doncaster shoppers this month as part of a major campaign to drive down winter fires.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is taking its ‘Watch Out In Winter’ roadshow to Lakeside Village Shopping Outlet, Doncaster, advising customers on ways to make their homes safer.

The fire service will be visiting Lakeside Village, Doncaster on January 17, January 27, February 3 and February 17 from 9am to 1pm.

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue knows the winter months are their busiest in terms of house fires, with fire fighters attending around 170 incidents in December to February alone each year.

Most of the fires start in the kitchen, with unattended cooking, dirty ovens and chip pans all major causes. Other winter related risks include candles, stand up heaters and unswept chimneys.

Head of community safety Kevin Ronan said: “Our data confirms what we already knew- that house fires are more likely than at any other time of the year. We’re only asking people to take basic precautions- like testing their smoke alarms and taking extra care with things like cooking and heaters.

“We’re grateful to Lakeside Village for giving us this opportunity to speak to large numbers of people and we hope shoppers will come and speak to us and listen to the advice offered.”

Cheryl Sadler Centre Manager said “We are happy to have the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue team here at Lakeside Village, the team do a fantastic job at giving out advice and potentially saving lives of the local people of Doncaster “
