Doncaster stars Sheridan Smith and Brian Blessed are among the celebrities delving in to their family history in the new series of BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are.

The duo will be looking in to their roots along with Julie Walters, Mary Berry, Billy Connolly, Brendan O’Carroll, Reggie Yates, Tamzin Outhwaite and Twiggy.

Sheridan’s mum, Marilyn Smith, said she is excited about seeing her daughter in the show, but she doesn’t know what she discovered.

“They asked her to let it be a surprise for the family and she wanted it to be a surprise for us so we do not know anything. She was delighted to be asked to be involved and we are looking forward to sharing her journey with her. It will be very interesting for the family to see the program when it airs, we are just waiting to see it, like everybody else.”

The episodes, which were filmed earlier this year, are part of the 10th series of the show.

The show will also celebrate its 100th episode during the series.

Brian, 77, was born in Montagu, Mexborough, and grew up in Goldthorpe.

He left school aged just 14, after his father William was injured in a pit accident.

He went on to work as a plasterer before becoming a household name, appearing in many West End musicals and TV shows.

He is also famous for having one of the most distinctive voices on stage and screen.

In 1993, he climed Everest, reaching 28,000 feet, the highest a man of his age has ever reached without oxygen.

Sheridan, 33, was born in Epworth.

Her mum and dad, Colin, performed as a Country and Western duo, The Daltons, as she grew up and she soon followed in their footsteps.

In 1999, aged 18, she landed her first television role in BBC period drama Wives and Daughters.

Since then, she has exploded across TV, the big screen and the stage.

She is most well-known for her roles as Emma in The Royle Family, Janet in Two Pints of Lager and Rudi in Gavin & Stacey.

She also appeared on the West End in 2010, playing the lead role, Elle Woods, in Legally Blonde.

She won a BAFTA for Best Leading Actress in 2013 for her portrayal of Charmian Biggs, wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Briggs, in ITV drama Mrs Biggs.

Who Do You Think You Are will air on BBC One in August.

A one-hour special will also feature in the series, reliving some of the most surprising discoveries in its history, including JK Rowling and Jeremy Paxman.
