Sheffield Eagles 14 London Broncos 32: Eagles slip to third defeat on trot
There was to be no Summer Bash joy for a delayed Sheffield Eagles after a 32-14 defeat to London Broncos in Blackpool.
Mark Aston’s side slipped to their third consecutive defeat, and their second of the season to the Broncos, but they weren’t helped when a vehicle fire on the M6 delayed kick off by 50 minutes.
London made a blistering start with the Eagles seemingly still on the bus. A crossfield bomb to the corner from Scott Leatherbarrow was collected by Rhys Williams who grounded, but Wes Naiqama missed the extras.
After former Eagle Matt Garside was denied by a brilliant last ditch tackle by George Tyson, the Eagles started to warm to the task.
Aston’s side came storming back when Menzie Yere made a trademark burst, and from the next play Quentin Laulu-Togagae showed a great dummy to dive over the whitewash. Cory Aston missed the conversion.
The Eagles were now in full flight and they took the lead when Aston finished a slick move involving Keal Carlile and Michael Knowles, before converting his own score.
London levelled when Leatherbarrow’s kick to the in goal area was spilled by Matty Fozard, and Nick Slyney scored between the sticks. Naiqama added the two.
Garside restored the Broncos’ lead when from a seemingly impossible situation on the last tackle, the back rower managed to finish in the corner. Naiqama missed the conversion.
More poor defending followed before the break when Alex Foster managed to wriggle away from three in Eagles colours before squeezing over the line, and Naiqama converted. London took a firm grip on proceedings after the break when Jack Bussey broke the line and handed on to Mark Offerdhal who ran in an easy score. Naiqama added the extras.
The Eagles had the last say when Michael Knowles found winger Rob Worrincy who bagged the final try of the game, but Aston failed with the conversion as London continued their good recent form.
