A flight which was due to bring stranded South Yorkshire passengers back home from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh tonight has been cancelled at the last minute.

Thomson Airways was due to fly passengers back to Doncaster Sheffield (Robin Hood) Airport tonight.

But the firm has released the following statement: “Thomson Airways can now confirm that due to a last minute change in Egyptian government restrictions we can only operate two flights from Sharm el Sheikh to the UK today (Friday 6th November).

“Customers travelling on TOM733 to Glasgow and TOM397 to Gatwick are expected to depart later today.

“We continue to work with the U.K. Government to try and finalise our flying programme for the weekend and we will update accordingly when further information becomes available.

“These flights will operate under special security measures mandated by the UK Government.

“Customers will not be able to bring any hold luggage with them on these flights.

“Only hand luggage can be brought on board and normal Thomson cabin baggage restrictions apply. All hold luggage will be returned to customers under separate secure cover arranged by the UK Government.

“All other customers remain in their hotels on the same board basis and our experienced resort team is keeping them up to date on the latest developments. Our UK team continues to liaise with the Government and the Egyptian authorities to try and resolve this fluid and continually evolving situation.

“We would like to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused and would like to thank them for their continued patience. As this is a continuously evolving situation, customers are advised to refer to the noticeboards in the hotels or our website for the latest information.
