Hairdresser Selena Crossland, from Mexborough, was crowned best dressed lady racegoer at Pontefract’s Ladies Day fixture.

Selena (32) who owns Selena’s Hair Boutique in Balby, fought off the challenge of a host of elegantly turned out ladies to land the keenly contested first prize.

Her prize included a spa experience package at The Feversham Arms and Verbena Spa in Helmsley, North Yorkshire worth over £500, betting vouchers worth £50 courtesy of totepool and a goodie bag.

She also qualifies for a place in the final to find the best dressed lady racegoer in Yorkshire, which takes place at Doncaster racecourse on September 8, during the St Leger Festival.

The star prize for the overall winner is a luxury pampering pyjama party for six at the award-winning Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel, Doncaster.

Selena said her winning outfit was made for her by her mother and sister who are both seamstresses, while her hat was made by milliner Julie Walker, who also owns Posies Florists in Mexborough.

She said: “I always like to have my race outfits made, rather than wear something from the high street. It certainly helps me to stand out.”

Selena attended the races with fiancé Michael Deakin and a group of friends and rounded off the day with a few drinks and a Chinese meal.

“We had a fantastic day out. I don’t think we backed any winners but being crowned the best dressed lady more than made up for that,” said Selena.

Other prize winners included Angela Edwards and her granddaughter Jasmine from Bentley.
