A police probe is underway into an arson attack in which 10 scrapped cars went up in flames in Doncaster this morning.

The blaze broke out at a disused scrap yard in Doncaster Road, Conisbrough, in the early hours of Friday last week.

Firefighters from Edlington fire station were alerted to the blaze at 4am and found 10 crushed vehicles engulfed in flames.

Flames had also spread to some nearby trees.

They spent a number of hours tackling the blaze before returning to the former scrap yard the next morning to ensure that the fire was totally out.

There were fears that because the blaze was deep seated it could have re-ignited.

Anyone with information about the fire or who saw anything suspicious on Thursday night or Friday morning should call South Yorkshire Police on 101.

Information about the incident can also be passed on to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
