THE Dearne Valley will gather in silent tribute this Sunday to honour servicemen and women killed in conflict.

Our war dead will be remembered during a two minutes silence at 11am at memorials across the area on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Jim Batty, treasurer of the Mexborough, Swinton and Kilnhurst Branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “It is always important to show your respect for those who have given their lives for this country.”

Veterans and civic leaders will gather outside Mexborough Police Station from 10.15am to march to the war memorial for an act of remembrance at 11am. A lunch for the gathering will follow at the L.N.E.R. Club in Rowms Lane.

Swinton residents are asked to gather at the town’s memorial near St Margaret’s Church from 10.45am for an act of remembrance from 11am.

A service will take place at St Peter’s Church in Conisbrough from 9.30am, followed by gathering at the memorial near Doncaster Road from 11am.

St Mary’s Church in Wombwell will be honouring those who gave their lives during a service at 10.15am. An act of remembrance follows at the memorial outside.

A parade, including former soldiers, cadets and civic leaders will be led through Rotherham for a service the minster from 9.45am. A gathering will follow at the war memorial in Clifton Park for wreath laying at 11am.

In Doncaster, civic mayor, Coun Christine Mills and elected mayor Peter Davies will gather at the war memorial in Bennetthorpe for a two minutes silence at 11am. A parade follows to the Minster Church of St George for service at 11.45am.

Over in Barnsley, mayor Dorothy Higginbottom will lead tributes at the war memorial in front of the town hall from 11am.
