Public meeting over traffic plans

ROWS are raging at Wombwell over issues linked with the old Wombwell High school.

At a public meeting on Monday, Lundhill Grove residents voiced concern over demolition lorries using a planned temporary access road.

Steve Earnshaw of Lundhill Grove organised the meeting that was attended by representatives of developers Laing O’Rourke.

About 30 local people raised concerns that lorries may ‘short cut’ through the estate, speed in built-up areas, and spread muck and mud.

Mr Earnshaw said: “Locals gave their preferred route as the top of Gypsy Lane, but Lundhill is favoured by both Barnsley Council and the developers.

“We were given assurances and were told that once the temporary road is there, the footpath can be extended to the top of the golf course.”

A spokeswoman for Barnsley Council said: “The Council has requested further information regarding the routing of traffic to and from the site. The council is waiting for a response from the applicant’s agent.”
