Police in hunt for armed handbag thief

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two women were threatened with a knife and then robbed in Swinton.

The two women, aged 44 and 63, were walking along Station Street, near to the library, when they were approached by a man holding a bladed weapon.

He demanded that the younger woman give him her handbag and after a brief struggle he pulled the bag away and ran off towards the back of the library.

Police were called to the scene and officers found the handbag in a bin on nearby Charnwood Street.

Some of the contents were missing, including a pink Sony Ericsson Zylo mobile phone.

Neither woman was hurt during the incident, which happened Sunday, January 30, at 8pm.

The offender is described as a white man, 5ft 9in tall and in his late teens to early 20s.

He had a medium build and a smooth round face with ‘squinty’ eyes. His hair was dark and short, but not cropped.

He ws wearing a grey jacket, which appeared to have a mottled effect or camouflage pattern. It was a waist length, zip-up jacket and his trousers were black or dark grey.
