Global pizza chain Papa John’s is to open a branch in Doncaster - and is seeking workers.

The American firm, which is the world’s third largest takeaway outlet and pizza company, is currently fitting out the new branch in Hall Gate.

The pizzeria has moved into premises previously owned by the Discount Furniture Company alongside the alleyway connecting Hall Gate with Wood Street.

The Papa John’s restaurant franchise was founded in 1983 when “Papa” John Schnatter converted a broom cupboard in the back of his father’s tavern, Mick’s Lounge, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, USA.

He then sold his 1971 Z28 Camaro to purchase $1,600 worth of used pizza equipment and began selling pizzas to the tavern’s customers out of the converted closet.

The business expanded rapidly and internationally, there are now more than 4,600 Papa John’s establishments, including over 3,200 in the USA and the remainder spread among 34 other countries with more than 300 branches in the UK.
