Human remains have been discovered at a Doncaster beauty spot popular with dog walkers.

The body parts are that of an adult and were discovered on a railway embankment near to the Hexthorpe Junction in Balby at 12.45pm on Sunday afternoon.

British Transport Police (BTP) did not rule out foul play and were trying to identify the remains and establish the cause of death today.

A force spokeswoman said: “It is too early to say wether officers believe there are suspicious circumstances. We are keeping an open mind at this stage and are also looking into possibility that the remains could be historic.

“The remains have been confirmed as being of a human adult but enquiries to establish the identity of the person and the cause of death are ongoing.

“The area is currently cordoned off while officers forensically recover the body which may take some time.”

Residents who live close to the scene told of their shock.

One woman, who did not want to be identified, said: “It is really surprising as it is a quiet area which is popular with dog walkers.

“It is a bit of a beauty spot and you would not expect to hear that something like this has happened.”

Civil servant Mark Laidler, aged 53, of Guest Lane, Warmsworth, said: “It is quite shocking to find out that something like this has happened so close to home. I was out walking my dog and saw about five or six police cars there and about 10 officers.

“It looked like quite a big police operation and I could see a white tent and officers in forensic gear.

“I spoke to a few people out walking nearby and everyone was wondering what was going on. Police had been there day and night since Sunday afternoon.”
