Residents have told of their shock over the death of a little girl who was found face down in the bath.

An inquest has been opened to try and establish the reasons behind the death of tragic Summer Shaw at the age of just four. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

Neighbours close to the family home in Chaucer Road, Mexborough, told how people locally were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “An elderly lady who lives close to them told me about it and it is shocking.

“It is a terrible thing to happen, especially at this time of the year.”

Another woman who wanted to remain anonymous added: “I can’t think what they (the parents) are going through.”

A hearing at Doncaster Coroners’ Court yesterday was told emergency services had rushed to the family home after Summer was found face down in the bath.

Paramedics tried to revive her at the scene and she was placed into an ambulance and taken to hospital. Medics made further resuscitation attempts but the toddler was pronounced dead.

Coroners’ officer Jessica Cox-Tomlinson told the inquest: “Summer had been found face down in the bath and was conveyed to Rotherham District General Hospital.

“Resuscitation attempts had taken place at the home and continued at the hospital, which sadly failed. She was pronounced dead at 9.27pm on December 6.”

Her parents were named in the hearing as Nicole Carr, a shop worker, and Carl Shaw, a call centre worker. No family members attended and they could not be reached at the time of going to press.

A post mortem examination has been conducted by a pathologist to try and establish the cause of death. Doncaster coroner Nicola Mundy said she is not yet in a position to release Summer’s body to her parents for funeral arrangements as further medical tests are due.

A police spokeswoman said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this stage.

The inquest was adjourned until next May.
