Apply for grants or lose them plea in Mexborough

Community groups in Mexborough are being urged to apply for grants to get projects aimed at improving their neighbourhoods off the ground.

The Government-led Community Development Foundation has awarded £11, 000 to the town and good causes are urged to apply for their share of the money.

Grants are available between £250 and £2, 500 but applications must be in by early November or the town will risk losing the funding package.

Christine Spence, a member of the Community First Panel for Mexborough, which administers the fund, invited groups to come forward.

The Mexborough resident said: “If applications don’t come in then we would lose the funding. But that has never happened before and we are sure that all the money will go out to good causes.

“The money is there for community groups. Please contact us with a request for funding, a description about the group and why you want the grant.

“The funding is a great way to help groups get projects off the ground.”

The is the fourth and final year of the fund, which has provided more than £30, 000 for the town in that time.

Previous groups to benefit include a neighbourhood watch scheme, which used the money to buy a mobile CCTV camera as a way to combat anti-social behaviour, while another funding package went to a community allotment scheme.

Donations have also been used to pay for days out for families in need. Groups will be asked to match fund any donations or provide the equivalent in volunteer working hours. Contact Christine for more information on 01709 582244.
