Parents speak of loss following canal tragedy

The family of the little boy who died after falling into a Doncaster area canal today spoke of their loss.

Matthew Cartwright’s family released a statement today which said: “We are devastated at the death of Matthew, which was a tragic accident.

“He was a beautiful, loving little boy and we miss him terribly.”

Matthew, eight, of Windhill Terrace, Mexborough, was with a family member when he fell into the South Yorkshire Navigation Canal near Talbot Street, Mexborough, around 5pm on Monday.

He was pulled from the water by emergency services and taken by police helicopter to Rotherham Hospital.

He was then transferred to Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he died on Tuesday night with his famiily by his side.

Police are treating the incident as a tragic accident.

A post mortem will be held to see how Matthew died.
