The parade, to celebrate the new Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Denise Fox, will this year take on a remembrance theme as the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of The Somme approaches.

Starting at 2.30pm today, there will be a parade from outside the Central Library to Sheffield Cathedral for a service at 3pm, with the HM Lord Lieutenant.

The service will include children from Ballifield Primary School Choir, Sheffield Cathedral Young Voices and soloist Roisin Meleady.

It marks a day of remembrance in Sheffield with the Armed Forces parade taking place in the morning at 10.30am.

Cllr Fox said: “I hope everyone will come along and celebrate both the past and present generations of our wonderful city. The 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme is one of the key themes for my year in office and it is right that my Civic Saturday should focus on the city’s commemorations.

“Next month I will stand with veterans and city representatives at Sheffield Memorial Park in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Somme, where so many Sheffielders lost their lives. This city has a proud tradition of remembrance and I am also proud to make this one of the cornerstones of my year in office.”
