Guards will also employ the help of trusted inmates who are situated on his block to keep an eye on the jailed footballer.

A source told the Mirror: 'The first year in prison is always a trying time and a trigger point for lots of emotions, especially for someone facing a long sentence.

“Yes, it is a year ticked off but also the beginning of another year stretching off into the distance so hardly a cause for celebration."

The former England, Manchester City and Sunderland winger is serving six years in jail for grooming and then engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan.

Johnson's trial at Bradford Crown Court heard that he had kissed and sexually touched the girl in his Range Rover, in a secluded spot in County Durham.
