UNITED Carpets have now moved out of the former South Yorkshire Times headquarters in Mexborough.
But the company has NOT moved into the purpose-built factory it was to inherit in February – just yards away, outside Mexborough railway station.
Instead, the firm has relocated to a huge new unit at Rowms Lane, in Swinton – some half a mile from the old White Rose Press building outside the station.
And the future of the old Times site – which had been earmarked for a new housing and retail development – is now a mystery.
United said this week that the huge warehouse, on Station Road – home to the Times and its print works for 30 years – WOULD now be demolished.
But staff would not say why United had relocated to Rowms Lane, referring us to the company’s property manager Robert Whiteley.
He has remained unavailable for comment.
When United first announced the move, last November, the plans were for 80 new homes, apartments and commercial units on the station approach.
Local store manager Jeff Banks said: “This has given us a great chance to move into bright new premises.
“We have been in Mexborough for a number of years now and it was important for us to stay in the town.
“We are only round the corner and the new base is far more visible as it is on a main road.
“We will have the same staff working here, and I will be looking to advertise for another employee soon.”
The company’s area manager David Code added: “Once we have cleared out completely the inside of the Station Road base the demolition work will begin. We were determined to stay within Mexborough because people know us as a local business.
“Our new location is much more visible, and with the number of people who will drive past every day we expect more people will visit the store.”
Proposals for the residential and commercial development have been on display for several months at the old United Carpets shop.
