Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust holds a staff awards ceremony every year to celebrate the achievements of staff who go the extra mile to provide high quality patient care, whether they work in a clinical or non-clinical setting.

Our Stars 2014 was held on Friday October 3 at the Forest Pines Hotel and Golf resort in Broughton. Darren Lethem from KCFM was the compere for the evening.

Staff from Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole hospitals alongside the Trust’s community services were honoured on the night.

Twelve winners received a certificate and trophy in celebration of their achievements, with nine teams and four individuals presented with awards on the night. They fought off competition from more than 300 nominees and a shortlist of 28 finalists.

Among the winners were clinical teams who have developed innovative new ways of working to benefit their patients and non-clinical staff who motivate and encourage their colleagues.

Two surprise awards were also announced on the night. Dennis Mendes Pinto, catering assistant at Grimsby hospital, was chosen by Karen Jackson to receive the chief executive’s award. Karen said: “I wanted to award Dennis for the way he talks to our patients, the public and our staff. He goes out of his way for everybody whatever they ask. Nothing is too much trouble.”

Dennis said: “I have worked for the Trust for the last eight years in the restaurant at Grimsby hospital. I like to work in a team, I like the public, patients and staff. It feels fantastic to have received the chief executive’s award. It was such a shock, as I didn’t have a clue. I was told I had to come to the awards but I had no idea why. It really is such a shock.”

Viv Duncanson, senior infection control nurse was also presented with flowers and a certificate in special recognition for her work to reduce infections at the Trust.

This year also saw the introduction of a new Patient’s Choice award, voted for by patients and their loved ones. Four winners were chosen out of nearly 200 nominations. Melinda Smith, a senior healthcare assistant working on ward 19 at Scunthorpe hospital and Helen Rippon, a paediatric speech and language therapist at Grimsby were winners alongside staff on Laurel ward (Grimsby) and ward 25 (Scunthorpe).

Karen Jackson, chief executive, said: “I know that many of our staff don’t realise that what they do is special. They see going the extra mile to make a difference to patients as part of their daily job.

“Our Stars is about recognising their achievements and celebrating them. We depend on the skills and professionalism of our staff and it’s clear from our winners and everyone who was shortlisted that there is a great deal of this within our organisation.”

Instead of prize money for the winners this year everyone who was shortlisted will have the opportunity to suggest how £4,000 is spent to benefit patients - so they may suggest a piece of equipment or an improvement to a patient environment.

A total of £1,200 was also raised on the night for the Trust’s charitable funds via a raffle.
