A new link corridor unveiled this week has been heralded as a Mexborough hospital’s ‘greatest achievement’.

The Montagu Hospital Comforts Fund, established in 1948 and run entirely by volunteers, has donated a staggering £160,000 to fund the corridor.

Just over half the money donated had been left to the charity from the late Mexborough-born Gordon Staples.

The remainder was raised from the proceeds of the charity’s Tea bar at Montagu Hospital and from local people. The Chairman of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals paid tribute to work of the Montagu Hospital Comforts Fund at a ceremony to mark the official opening of the new corridor in April 2015.

Trust Chairman Chris Scholey said: “This corridor is a fantastic new feature for Montagu Hospital. To show our heartfelt appreciation we have dedicated the corridor to the work of the Comforts Fund and added their name and logo to the flooring of the corridor as a lasting tribute.”

Nora Gill, Chairman of the Montagu Hospital Comforts Fund and former Clinical Nurse Manager at Montagu Hospital, continued: “Now for the first time in the hospitals’ history you can walk its full length without having to venture outside. “Bringing comfort to patients and hospital visitors is our main aim and funding this new corridor is our greatest achievement.”
