New book based in the Isle is launched

A first-time author is eagerly anticipating the arrival of the first copy of her children’s book which has been given the seal of approval by schoolchildren from the Isle.

Sea-Salty-Sam and Solomon-Shrew is aimed at children aged between four and eight, and is written and illustrated by Sue Hartlebury.

Sue, who lives on High Street, Eastoft, is already an established artist and is currently preparing for an exhibition of her paintings.

But a visit to an arts fair convinced her to add her own brightly, coloured pictures to the new book she was working on.

“Sea-Salty-Sam is a friendly, little, furry green man from the Isle of Axholme. He is out sailing his boat and gets washed up by the sea in a strange place called Seatown.

“He decides to go out and explore and on his adventure he learns about all kinds of things such as baking and pets. His new friend Solomon-Shrew gets involved in his adventure.”

And Sue explained she also wanted to teach young children about water safety after two incidents where she got into danger in the sea.

“Once was an instance where I was about 12-years-old and went on holiday with my friend to Cornwall,” she said.

“We went into the sea and myself and three others got caught out by the current. It was a tremendous struggle to get back to shore.

“The thing was the red flag was waving for danger and we had ignored it. We all got back safely but it was very frightening. I mention about the red flag being for danger in my book to try and teach children about safety.”

Sue set about writing her book when her two daughters decided to travel to Australia.

“I wanted to do something to take my mind off their being away and I was also very inspired by their bravery in going off all that way,” she said.

Sue has worked with Eastoft Primary School to ensure her book is well received by children. A percentage of book sales will go to the RNLI.

She is now working on an adult book called 22 Secrets of the Yellow Caravan.

Sea-Salty-Sam and Solomon-Shrew is priced £6.99, but will be £5.99 for people on the Isle in July and August. Sue will be at a book signing at Seven Lakes in Crowle on July 13. Visit Sea-Salty-Sam’s Facebook page
