EVERY person has their cross to bear – but not everyone walks 40 miles across Yorkshire with it!
However, have-a-go vicar Fr Peter Needham, carried his 27lb wooden crucifix from York Minster to his church at Grimethorpe, in three days.
He bandaged his cross in safety tape to make it more visible, and hopes to have raised around £200,000 in sponsor money.
This will go towards vital improvements to St Luke’s Church.
Work that needs doing includes new community facilities such as a disabled toilet and a kitchen. And new flooring would allow a toddlers’ group to use the building.
Previously, a community campaign titled Love of the Parish saved the 107-year old Grimethorpe church from demolition.
Fr Needham was joined by the Bishop of Pontefract and the Barnsley Sea Cadets for his triumphant march back to Grimethorpe, on Saturday.
He said his 40-mile feat was “all for the love of God and the love of the parish”. Donations to top up his sponsor money are still welcome.
