A man was taken to hospital at the weekend after an arson attack at a block of communal flats in Dunscroft, Doncaster.

Fire crews were called to Durham Road at 11.15pm on Saturday when an old sofa was set alight next to the bin store of a house.

The flames spread up the wall and damaged a window and residents had to be evacuated for a short time as the fire caused damage to the external gas main.

Some of the neighbours tried to pull the burning sofa away from the building and a man in his 30s suffered the effects of smoke inhalation and needed medical treatment.

A fire service spokesman confirmed the cause of the fire was deliberate.

Witnesses, or anyone with information, is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1425 of July 5. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to report crime anonymously.

Other crews were sent to Greenleafe Avenue, Wheatley Hills, just after 8pm yesterday where a cooker had caught fire but it was out when they arrived and no-one was hurt.
