Major tailbacks after a burst tyre causes lorry to come off bridge and then set on fire

A man sustained cuts, bruises and a dislocated shoulder after the lorry he was driving came off a bridge on the M18.

Police were called at 3.36pm on Thursday May 8 to the vehicle which was travelling on the M18 South, at Rawcliffe Bridge.

A tyre on the lorry had burst, which caused the vehicle to slide across the road and, fall over the bridge. As it fell it set on fire.

The driver of the lorry, a 61-year-old man, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary and treated for cuts, bruises and dislocated shoulder.

Police closed the M62 Westbound to the M18 as all emergency services helped to assist in the recovery of the vehicle, which was carry fertiliser.

The road was fully open by 3am this morning (Friday May 9 ).
