Around 30 firefighters spent most of last night tackling a fire that broke out at an industrial premises in Askern.
The fire at Askern UK Ltd, based just off Askern High Street, broke out at around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon after an area of wooden pallets caught fire.
The fire involved wooden pallets in an area measuring around 100metres by 80 metres in size, taking up much of the woodyard to the rear of the property.
An eye witness said: “There’s so much black and thick smoke.
They continued: “You can see it from miles away.”
A total of six fire engines – from Askern, Adwick, Doncaster, Thorne, Dearne and Tankersley stations – and 30 firefighters were called to the scene.
Speaking from the scene of the blaze, Station Manager, Steve Adams, told The Star: “The fire we’ve attended is in a woodyard.
Mr Adams continued: “It’s quite a large area, about 80 square meters, and there have been six fire engines in attendance. “We’ve been putting seven water jets on to the fire, which has helped us to get the fire under control.”
A high volume pump was deployed to get extra water on to the fire, which was drawn from nearby Askern lake.
As The Star went to press, a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire was under control, but added they expect firefighters to be ‘tackling the blaze all night.’
No-one is reported to have been injured in the blaze.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
