Local artists take centre stage at Barnsley Civic Theatre

Scratch Night, Barnsley Civic

The Civic Scratch night provides local emerging artists and companies the opportunity to try out their new work in front of a public audience and gain feedback to develop it further.

Helen Ball, chief executive at The Civic said: “The Civic Scratch Night enables us to support and build relationships with artists making performance locally and regionally and help them develop their work.”

The five artists testing out their new shows at the Civic Scratch this Thursday, April 28, are North East dance theatre company Company of Others, Manic Chord Theatre and Paper Whale from West Yorkshire, The Bare Project from Sheffield, and Barnsley’s own The Outfit Collaborative.

Saskia Solomons from Paper Whale Said: “As a new-born company, we are devising our first show. At this delicate stage, testing our ideas in front of an audience is crucial. We are hoping to receive as much feedback as possible, be it from the Q&A, feedback forms or (most importantly) the audience’s reaction. We are looking forward to finding inspiration in the work of the other performing companies. A night like this is a wonderful opportunity to meet peers and even potential future collaborators.”

Civic Scratch artist Hayley Youell from the Outfit Collaborative said: “I found out about the Civic Scratch through Ian (Theatre Programmer at The Civic), and the opportunity became part of my project as Artist in Residency”

Civic Scratch is at The Civic this Thursday at 7.30pm.

Tickets are ‘Pay What You Can Afford’ at the end of the night, and all donations will be distributed equally between the artists, to support the development of their work, and The Civic.
