DONCASTER’S historic St Leger has been voted one of the most popular racedays in Britain among fans in a new survey.
Town Moor’s long-running September meeting was ranked among the top five racing events in the country in a vote conducted to find the UK’s top racedays.
Racing bible The Racing Post found that Doncaster’s classic meeting was the fifth most popular of all races in Britain, the second best flat meeting, and the best meeting in the Yorkshire racing calendar.
Hundreds of thousands of votes were counted and verified, with the top racedays being selected from a shortlist of 50.
Racecourse managing director Mark Spincer said he was delighted the raceday had been recognised as one of the best in Britain.
He said: “The entire team at Doncaster Racecourse is delighted to have received this recognition. We work tirelessly to ensure we offer guests an exceptional raceday experience – from the high standard of racing to excellent hospitality and fantastic facilities.
“The Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is the pinnacle event in our racing calendar, so we’ve always known how fantastic it is.
“But it’s great to know that racegoers themselves agree – we’re thrilled.”
The festival attracts more than 60,000 people across the four days, in excess of 30,000 of them attending for the St Leger raceday on Saturday.
Mr Spincer added: “We’ve already sold half of our premier tickets for St Leger, with more than six months to go until the event.
“The success of the meeting played a part in attracting almost 220,000 racegoers over the course of 2012 – an increase on 2011 – and we’ve seen growth in the sales of annual memberships, with corporate, intermediate and junior badges all sold out. “We have fewer than 200 full badges left, and it’s only February. This surge in sales and the recognition from The Racing Post is vindication that we are getting our offer right, and giving racegoers a really great day out.”
