The Crookes-born rock and blues man, whose career spanned more than 50 years, was not related to the second-placed Common People star - although the rumour persists, particularly across the globe, that the pair are connected.

Third place in the poll went to Housemartins and The Beautiful South frontman Paul Heaton who secured 11% of the vote.

Although Merseyside born, Heaton, whose hits include A Little Time and Happy Hour, moved to Sheffield as a youngster and spent his childhood growing up in the city and becoming a diehard Sheffield United fan.

It was enough to put him ahead of homegrown Arctic Monkeys star Alex Turner who landed fourth spot (10%) and The Human League's Phil Oakey who finished in fifth spot with 8%.
