Numerous duel partnerships have achieved international fame and fortune in the world of jazz, from Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, Johnny and Baby Dodds to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, and John Dankworth and Cleo Laine and many others.
Although not widely known beyond Yorkshire’s borders, local musical treasures Dicky Emmerson and Tony Spragg are deservedly highly regarded and respected by their avid loyal supporters in the Doncaster area.
Unfortunately, pianist Tony reluctantly decided last Autumn to cease playing at evening gigs, much to the dismay of his ardent fans, though great news announced at the August session is that Tony has agreed to re-unite with Dickie and company for a welcome one-off gig on Monday September 10.
During Tony’s absence, whilst keyboard men Robert Baker and Norman Williams have filled in admirably, many will agree that Spraggy and Dickie have a very special instinctive rapport, which will surely guarantee a bumper audience at their Monday date at The Conservative Club on September 10. Don’t miss it. Starts at 8.30pm, admission £3.50 at the door.
Meanwhile, another remarkable local partnership will be in action at The White Swan, Frenchgate on Saturday September 1, between 12noon and 3pm, admission free, in the form of guitar maestro Terry Allonby and keyboards wizaed Nigel Chapman, plus the dynamic pulsating drumming of Mark Kerrigan and probable guest musos.
Thursday 1September 13 sees the return of Jazz into Doncaster live sessions, with a special to launch the season in spectacular style featuring internationally renowned star trombonist Roy Willliams, one of the handful of British jazz men to have the honour of performing at the legendary Dick Gibson Jazz Party in Colorado USA, who will be joined on stage by Roy Norton on trumpet, Jon Taylor reeds, and The Nicola Farnon Quartet. Admission is £8 at the door and the music kicks off at 8.30pm. Jazzers are anticipated to turn out in force, so advice is to be early.
Following up on Thursday September 27 at the Con Club is Matt Palmer’s Bee Keeper Five making their debut at the popular venue.
Barnsley Jazz presents The Chicago Teddy Bears at The Fairway Hotel (S75 4LS) on Monday August 27, tel (01226) 281805/290105 and news is that Donny jazz diva Fiona Sargeson is likely to explore new avenues, by teaming with New Orleans Wiggle at the Con Club in November.
Watch out for up-dates.
