He said: “During this cold weather, many local residents may be concerned about staying warm. I would urge anyone concerned to get in touch with the Home Heat Helpline and would also ask everyone to look out for neighbours, friends or relatives who may be in difficulty and make sure they are aware of this service.”

Lawrence Slade, spokesman for the service, added: “If anyone is feeling the cold this winter or is concerned about keeping their home warm they can call our free helpline to find out what they can do to help themselves or visit the www.homeheathelpline.org.uk website. With one in ten houses across the country eligible for some kind of help they’ve got nothing to lose.”

He further added: “Simple steps that people can take to reduce their energy bills include installing cavity wall insulation, which can save them up to £160 per year on bills. We also recommend that they put in loft insulation, which can save a quarter of a home’s heating costs. In addition put in energy saving light bulbs.”
