An innovative project to improve the transition from children to adult mental health services has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.

The Peer Support Worker Employment Initiative run by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust is the first of its kind in children and young people’s services.

It has now been shortlisted in the Nursing Times Awards Child and Adolescent Services category, one of eight shortlisted entries out of 35 entries in that category from around 650 entries across all categories.

Working in Doncaster and Rotherham, peer support workers are people with experience of mental health problems, who work with and inspire children and young people with similar problems to show them that recovery is possible and that they can lead a productive and fulfilling adult life.

The initiative also provides meaningful paid employment for people with mental health experience, inspiring hope to children and young people and their families.
