a sharp axe, a black hood and a decent chopping block are just three of the items listed as ‘essential’ for spooky evening tours at Conisbrough Castle.
The English Heritage tours will be led by a medieval outlaw and an executioner - so are not for the faint-hearted!
On October 28 and 29, willing visitors can put themselves in the hands of the two guides to explore how law and order worked in medieval society, within the atmospheric setting of Conisbrough Castle.
The tours take visitors around the castle ruins – already very spooky in low-light conditions – and inside the castle’s iconic keep to hear gruesome tales of crime and punishment, almost guaranteed to curdle the blood!
“By modern standards, the treatment of anyone guilty of a crime was severe, with simple gossiping punished with a day in the scold’s bridle, and the theft of anything valued at more than two pennies punishable by death!” said regional events manager, Jon Hogan. The jaunts provided by specialist company, Terror Tours, are not suitable for vry young children or those of a nervous disposition. Warm clothes and stout footwear are advisable, Call 01709 863329 for tickets or further details.
