A party of 42 pupils and four teachers from Sheffield High School for Girls spent 10 days in Delhi to learn about the lives of young people and young women in India.

They carried out voluntary work at partner school, St Thomas’ School for Girls, at the Riverside Free School and at a young women’s empowerment project in Delhi. There were also visits to the Taj Mahal and the Lotus Temple.

The trip was led by Headmistress Valerie Dunsford.

Mrs Dunsford said: “During the trip we visited two schools, a women’s project, an eco-project and lots of cultural sites. It was a trip of a lifetime for us all.”

Students took part in question and answer sessions with doctors from local clinics, where they heard about the differences between healthcare in the UK and India, and visited Father Ravi’s shelter for homeless children.

Jemima, a Year 12 pupil, said: “Visiting the Riverside Free School was such an amazing experience. The children were filled with happiness and although there was a small language barrier we soon learnt the way to communicate easily and in a fun manner”.

“To see the children understanding and enjoying what we were teaching them, and that us being there was making even a small impact upon them, was one of the best feelings and by far my favourite part of the trip.”
