Four people in Wombwell have escaped a serious house fire in Wombwell in the early hours of this morning.
Firefighters from Barnsley, Cudworth and Dearne stations were called out at about 3am today to tackle the blaze at a property on Bond Street.
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the bottom of the property was 'gutted' by the serious blaze.
Two men and two women had been inside the house at the time and had precautionary medical checks but did not need to go to hospital.
An investigation is now under way into the precise cause of the fire, which is understood to have been started accidentally as the occupants were 'trying to keep warm'.
