A big cheer went up when Doncaster's Christmas lights were switched on.

An evening of musical entertainment will accompany this year’s Doncaster Christmas lights switch.

The festive celebrations feature electric violinist and Britain’s Got Talent star Alexandra Parker, singer and Madonna tribute Caroline Seymour and characters from this year’s Christmas pantomime Sleeping Beauty.

The switch on will take place next Thursday from 4.30pm at Clock Corner in the town centre.

Town Crier, Henry Cryer, will open the celebrations and the official lights switch on will take place at 6pm, when Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies with help from special guest Kieran Waite from Warmsworth Primary and Alexandra Parker will illuminate lights across the town centre.

Peter Davies, Mayor of Doncaster said: “I am pleased to be able to turn on the Christmas lights this year with the help of Keiran Waite who was the winner of a competition to design a road safety mascot, PC Bumble, earlier in the year to encourage parents to park safely near schools.

“The turning on of the Christmas lights marks the start of late night shopping in the town centre and I hope that everyone will take advantage of the extended opening hours to complete their Christmas gift buying. I am also happy that we will be treated to a performance from Alexandra Parker, who I understand prior to her recent fame on Britain’s Got Talent, was the first person in Doncaster to be granted a busker permit.”
