Almost a quarter of Sheffield folk search for Christmas presents with local top gift hide-away (spoiler alert!) wardrobes.

Nobody wants a surprise ruined but every year many across South Yorkshire are tempted to rummage through their home looking for festive gifts (illustrated here by a determined dachshund locating hidden treats). But where are the most common places we hide our presents? It turns out those looking for a sneak peek at a seasonal gift before the big day should first check the wardrobe.

New study of 2000 UK adults commissioned by Beaverbrooks the Jewellers (celebrated here by "which gem are you" quiz) revealed place regional gift-givers are most likely to hide surprise presents after wardrobes (45%) is under the bed (9%) and in locked suitcases (9%).

However, when it comes to that special gift such as engagement ring or luxury watch, over two in ten (22%) of hiders in our area stash such precious things in secure case.

When it came to finding the perfect hiding place for a special present, a quarter of us take anything up to an hour scouring the house for a suitable spot while 11% of sneaky hiders have even used a lower value gift as a decoy to throw snoopers off the scent.

Places least likely to harbour a Christmas surprise are neighbour’s house (4.5%), laundry basket (2%) and at work (2%). As for strange hiding places, some respondents even discovered presents tucked away in linen cupboards as well as lofts and relative's homes.

The survey confirmed nearly a quarter of adults in the area admit to trying to find gifts before the big day but, despite the temptation to sneak a peek, 64% believe a surprise present from their partner makes for an extra special Christmas Day moment.

In order to help those looking to hide a special surprise from their loved one, Beaverbrooks has created interactive house http://www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/little-moments-secret-places to show best hiding places among other gifting tips.

And those who find the hidden present in the house will, up until Christmas Eve, have a chance of winning £500 Beaverbrooks gift card .

Said a company spokesman: “When it comes to buying that special gift for Christmas, whether it’s a watch for him or a beautiful piece of jewellery for her, you want to make sure it stays hidden until the day, which is why we’ve created a house that people can explore on our website, offering hints and tips for keeping your presents under wraps.

“We believe Christmas is about the little, meaningful moments. Surprising a loved one with something they will cherish forever is one of the best things you can do.”
