Epworth society sees Isle from new eagle-eye angle

The 30-plus members were given a talk by retired archaeologist Malcolm Dolby, who lives at West Butterwick, entitled Axholme from the Air.

The talk, at the town’s Red Lion Hotel, was illustrated by aerial images of the Isle.

Edward Mardell, who attended the event, said: “It was an entertaining and informative talk.”

Mr Dolby, who has more that 1,000 aerial images of the Isle, is not a pilot himself and said he has to rely on friends who are to take him in the air to get his photographs.

The former Bassetlaw District Council Museum Curator and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Antique keeper said that most of the ancient features of Isle villages and towns are not clearly visible at ground level and can be seen only from the air.

The Epworth Men’s Society holds monthly meetings from October through to June, with a variety of speakers and trips to places of interest. Next on the agenda is an evening visit to Doncaster Air Museum in April.
