Public inquiry into pit plans

A PUBLIC inquiry is resuming into plans to redevelop a former colliery site into housing and public open space.

UK Coal was refused planning permission for the scheme on the site of the former North Gawber Colliery and CISWO sports pitch, Mapplewell, Barnsley, which is now being considered by a planning inspector on appeal.

The company is proposing residential development including retirement homes, public open space and relocation of an existing sports pitch.

The inquiry, held in the Lecture and Seminar Room, Barnsley Central Library, Shambles Street, resumes at 10am on Tuesday and is scheduled to last four days.
